Coal Mining The Modern Way – Newcastle NSW

Australian Workers Film Guide

Summary

Silent Movietone newsreel footage of modern underground coal mining techniques in Newcastle, New South Wales, in the 1950s. The footage shows miners walking in and out of the tunnel, miners picking and shoveling coal underground, a pit pony hauling skips as well as extensive footage of miners operating mechanised coal cutting equipment and transportation underground and on the surface. In the first scene, miners enter a tunnel named the State Coal Mine Awaba, suggesting that much of this footage was shot in this Newcastle area mine.
